The workers at Suzuki’s Indian unit, Maruti Suzuki went on flash strike today. The company has announced that it has stopped production at its Manesar plant, which manufactures the popular 'Swift' hatchback among other models. The company said in a statement, "The MSIL management is in the process of preparing schedules for casual workers. The striking workers did not give us any notice before dumping the production today," the spokesperson said. "The workers' action clearly violates the agreement that they had signed with the management on 1 October. It is a breach of faith ... a mockery."

Labour strike at Maruti Suzuki's plant called off

The over a month long labour unrest between the management and workers of Maruti Suzuki India's Manesar plant ended on Saturday following talks brokered by the Haryana government.
In an agreement, the workers agreed to sign the contentious good conduct bond laid down by the management. Under the agreement, the company agreed to conditionally take back 18 trainees who were suspended.
However, it would not take back the 44 regular employees against whom disciplinary action was taken and that they would be under suspension.

Finance Minister urges states to bring all workers under pension scheme

The Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee asked all the State Governments to take-up a campaign to bring all workers in the informal and unorganised sectors under the co-contributory ‘Swavlamban’ pension scheme. He said that as all public sector banks are almost completely on Core Banking Solution (CBS) and the Regional Rural Banks(RRBs) are nearing the completion of Core Banking Solutions, the State Govts were advised to adopt the electronic benefit transfer to beneficiaries who have bank accounts. 54.9 million new rural jobs created through govt’s employment guarantee scheme

The govt’s ambitious Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) provided jobs to 54.9 million across the country during 2010-11. This was stated by Jairam Ramesh, minister for rural development the parliament.
Ramesh said, there has been steady increase in the total number of households provided employment. He said though the total number of households provided employment increased in 2010-11 compared to 2009-10, there was a decline in persondays generated in 2010-11. Government of India and World Bank sign US$ 1billion agreement to give a major boost to rural livelihoods

The government of India and the World Bank today signed a credit agreement of US$1 billion (approximately Rs. 4,600 crores) for the National Rural Livelihoods Project (NRLP). The Project will strengthen the implementation of newly launched National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM). The credit is from the International Development Association (IDA) – the World Bank’s concessionary lending arm – the Credit is on IDA terms with a maturity of 25 years, including a five year grace period.
