Paris has started two month long trials small electric cars that is available for hire in a car-sharing scheme. The plan is called “Autolib'” and hopes to herald a new era in transportation.
The four-seat car is a electrically driven with a top speed of 130km/h (80mph) and can travel 250 km on a single charge. It is available on yearly subscriptions and costs 144 Euros. A daily and weekly subscription costs 10 and 15 Euros respectively. Additionally, every half-hour of driving costs five Euros. Autolib' parent company, Bolloré Group, hopes run 3,000 cars by next summer.

India falls short of coal production target

The country's domestic coal production fell short of target in 2010-11. Coal India missed its output target and produced 431.33 million tonnes (MT) of coal in 2010-11 against the revised target of 440.20 MT. This was due to environment ministry not allowing the expansion of projects falling in areas categorised as critically polluted under comprehensive environment pollution index (CEPI). In 2009, the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) had introduced the CEPI to categorise the environmental quality at given locations and conducted a nation-wide assessment of industrial clusters.

India to develop sixty solar cites under renewable energy propgramme

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is implementing a programme on ‘Development of solar cities’ which aims to reduce a minimum of 10% of the projected demand of conventional energy of the city through renewable energy installations and energy efficiency measures. Sixty cities are proposed to be developed as solar cities during the eleventh plan period including four model solar cities and 10 pilot solar cities. The master plan for each solar city is being prepared to assess and utilize various renewable sources including solar, wind, municipal waste etc.

India invests heavily in wind and solar energy sector

A wind power capacity of 565 MW has been installed in India in the current year (upto July, 2011) with private sector investment of around US$ 738 million (Rs. 3,400 crore). This information was minister of new and renewable energy Dr.Farooq Abdullah in the parliament. He said the government is promoting wind power projects through private sector investment by providing fiscal and promotional incentives such as 80% accelerated depreciation, concessional import duty on certain components of wind electric generators and excise duty exemption to manufacturers.

India added 1645 MW of new power from waste regeneration against a target of 1700 MW in the 11th five year plan. The present installed capacity for generation of power from biomass including paddy husk and bagasse based cogeneration in sugar mills is 1045 MW and 1742 MW respectively. This was informed by Dr Dr. Farooq Abdullah, Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy in the parliament.

India setting up five projects to recover energy from municipal solid wastes

Indian government is setting up of five new projects on energy recovery from municipal solid wastes. These projects are located in Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Delhi. The project in Uttar Pradesh will produce 5 MW power using biomethanation technology. The projects in Andhra Pradesh are based on refuse derived fuel combustion technology and will produce 12.6 MW power. The Delhi project is capable of producing 3.5 MW based on incineration technology. The programme provides for capital subsidy of Rs. 20 million per MW with on upper limit of Rs. 10 million per project.

Licence cancellation threat looms large over telecom operators for unutilised spectrum

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has recommended for cancellation of 53 licences of telecom operators due to their failure to start services. It is proposed to take final decision on recommendations of the TRAI after taking into consideration legal advice in this regard. This statement was given by Milind Deora, the Minister of State Communication and Information Technology in response to a question in the parliament. Earlier notices were sent to Aircel, Dishnet, Etisalat DB, Idea, Sistema Shyam, Spice and Vodafone for not utilising allotted spectrum.
